Infant Deaths Prompt Stroller Recall

After the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC") received reports of the recent strangulation deaths of four infants, Graco Children's Products Inc. is recalling close to 2 million baby strollers. This recall comes on the heels of a Graco recall of 1.5 million strollers earlier this year after the CPSC received reports of children's fingers being amputated.

The current reports indicate that the strollers were designed such that the infants were able to slip through an opening between the stroller tray and the seat bottom causing them to subsequently catch their necks on the stroller tray. The newest recall applies specifically to Graco Quatro Tour and MetroLite strollers, which are ordinarily found at popular retail outlets such as Target, Sears, and Babies R Us. The recall however does not affect the stroller when it is used in conjunction with the infant car seat, as consumers can continue to safely use the stroller as a travel system.

In addition to the recently reported four deaths, the CPSC reported it had been made aware of other similar incidents which resulted in infant bruising, hospital visits or other injury.

For its part, Graco is currently urging consumers to contact the company for a free repair kit.
