The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an alert warning the public of the potential risks of birth defects resulting from the use of the antidepressant, Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride). Results of the study suggest that the use of Paxil increases the risk of birth defects, particularly heart defects, when women take it during their first three months of pregnancy. Paxil, which is commonly used to treat depression, is also prescribed to treat anxiety, panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post traumatic stress disorder.
The FDA has also issued a warning to consumers stating the drug can cause suicide and violence in children and teenagers. In addition, the study revealed that suddenly stopping the medication produced terrible withdrawal symptoms, making it highly addictive. Some of the more severe withdrawal symptoms included: homicidal and suicidal thoughts, tremors, severe depression, psychotic episodes including visual and/or audible hallucinations, and illusions.
If you or a loved one have taken Paxil during pregnancy and this resulted in a birth defect or the loss of a loved one due to any of the above side effects, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
